The Autumn term topic is The Victorians:
We will be studying many aspects of this important era through much of the curriculum along with other subjects.
This half term we will focus on the following:
The children's English work will focus on the novel 'Cogheart' by Peter Bunzl. This story is a thrilling, magical adventure set in Victorian times, and follows the characters of Lily and Robert and their mechanical fox Malkin! The children will be learning how to describe characters, write interesting story settings, create scenes and re-enact scenes from the book and re-write particular chapters using their story-writing skills! Comprehension lessons will also focus on individual chapters from the book whereby the children will read, discuss and answer a variety of questions about the text.
In Maths this half term the children will be focusing on and learning about Place Value and Number (Numbers to 1,000,000+), Multiplication and Division strategies and Geometry - Properties of Shapes. The children will have Mental Maths, Times Tables and Division sessions in addition to their daily Maths lessons. The children will be learning and consolidating their Times Tables knowledge using BBC Supermovers, so listen out at home for these fun songs!
In Science this half term, we will be learning about Forces:
Identifying forces as pushes and pulls
Explaining gravity as a force
Identifying Isaac Newton's discoveries
Explaining the effects of friction, including air and water resistance
Identifying different mechanisms
The children will create a PowerPoint using images, sound, text and movement focusing on a particular aspect of the Victorian Era.
Through these two subjects the children will learn about the following:
Victorian Towns and Cities, the importance of Railways and Canals using UK maps
Art/Design & Technology
The children will learn about two famous Victorians, their lives and their important work:
Isambard Kingdom Brunel
The children will also create their own William Morris artwork and design their own bridges.
This half term the children will learn and perform a number of Music Hall songs popular in the Victorian times such as:
Any Old Iron
