Languages

At Willaston Primary Academy we believe the learning of languages provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all children.

We aim for children to foster an interest in learning languages by introducing them in a fun and enjoyable way, develop an awareness of cultural differences in other countries, further their speaking and listening skills, stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about languages and lay the foundations for future study and careers.

Using La Jolie Ronde schemes of work as a basis, along with other resources we promote the learning of Spanish in Reception & KS1, French in KS2 and a term of German in Year 6 taught by a German speaking teacher in addition. The reason for the choice of languages is in preparation for these three languages being taught currently at all of the local secondary schools and also community links e.g. Bentley

Children will learn songs and rhymes, poems and stories in all year groups, but will have a particular emphasis on songs, rhymes, games with the Early Years children. In Year 1/2 the focus is on listening, exploring, early reading, speaking, followed by broadening vocabulary, extended reading and basic writing in Y3/4 and completing the programme of study in Y5/6 with more detailed written work, conversational development.

The Languages curriculum will be enhanced by celebrating the International/European Day of Languages each year, promoting the use of Duolingo as an additional fun learning resource and creating links with local secondary schools and businesses to promote language speaking further.
