Languages

At Willaston Primary Academy we believe the learning of languages provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all children.

We aim for children to foster an interest in learning languages by introducing them in a fun and enjoyable way, develop an awareness of cultural differences in other countries, further their speaking and listening skills, stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about languages and lay the foundations for future study and careers.

We promote the learning of Spanish in Reception & KS1, and French in KS2. The reason for the choice of languages is to give our children a taste of two of the languages which they will be taught at whichever secondary school they choose to attend.

Children will learn songs and rhymes, poems and stories in all year groups, with an emphasis on the 'fun' elements of learning languages. All classes have a 'Big Book' which is where we record our learning, through photographs of the activities completed.

The Languages curriculum will be enhanced by celebrating European Day of Languages each year, promoting the enjoyment of learning foreign languages. During the day, we complete activities to learn about various European countries and their cultures, all whilst dressed up as a country of our choice! We also run French and Spanish after school clubs, which have an emphasis on playing games, speaking activities, listening to stories and singing songs in the language.
