PE

Intent:

At Willaston Primary Academy, we have a clear aim and philosophy regarding physical education. We want every child to be fit and active, develop life-long skills and be physically confident. We want our children to live a healthy lifestyle and to recognise the importance of sport and being active for their mental and physical health. Our children are taught a range of skills through a variety of sports and games and are given plenty of opportunities to showcase these skills throughout their time at Willaston, whether it be in PE lessons, after school clubs or taking part in sports competitions.

With our school being a part of the Crewe and Nantwich School Sport Partnership (CNSSP), our children are given the opportunity to demonstrate their teamwork and talent within an enjoyable and competitive environment. At Willaston, we compete in a wide range of sports and activities, some to interest and motivate students and others to highlight the talent and hard work of our pupils. Some examples of our out-of-school activities are: gymnastics, athletics football, hockey and dodgeball! These competitions and activities have always developed a sense of pride with these pupils that have represented our school. We believe that sport is inclusive at Willaston and many of our children are invited to take part in the Games for All Festival, which is specifically designed for children with SEN who may not ordinarily get the opportunity to experience a competitive sporting activity.

Our key areas of learning are: throwing, catching, balance, flexibility, speed, strength as well as team work, sportsmanship and tactics. Children are also encouraged to take a leadership role and support their team mates within our lessons, something that we would like our pupils to continue after they have left school. These key skills are assessed individually by the class teacher and our sports coach who are then able to challenge our pupils, plan meaningful and engaging lessons.

Implement:

  • PE at Willaston provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sports activities including invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and OAA
  • Using quality first teaching, our PE curriculum is designed using the PE passport. This ensures that our children are taught a range of skills and sports across their time at primary school.
  • Our skills are mapped and built upon through sports, starting in our EYFS all the way through to Y6
  • Our children are given a plethora of opportunities to experience sports, whether it be through our lessons, at break or lunch or after school clubs.
  • The importance of being active is emphasized in our lessons as well as our science and PSCHE curriculum
  • We work closely with our sports coach Chris Jones who enhances our PE curriculum and offers several afterschool clubs across the year
  • All children receiving 2 hours of high-quality Physical Education each week regardless of the weather or other external factors
  • Pupils take part in 2 high quality PE lessons each week.
  • Children in year 3 and 4 attend swimming once a week for a term per class.
  • Inclusivity by putting support for children with SEND in line with other subjects and differentiating using STEP.
  • That children unable to take part are included by involving them in activities related to the lesson e.g. umpiring or scoring

Impact:

Our children develop a love and joy for taking part in sports and we help motivate children to participate in a range of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. We teach the importance of being active and our children learn to take responsibility of their own health and fitness. Many of our pupils go on to enjoy competitive sports in and out of school. Our children will hopefully go on to live happy and healthy lives, utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
