Topics – Märchen von Deutschland (Tales of Germany)
For our topic this half term we will be learning about Germany, it's place in the world, its geography and how it compares with with the UK. As part of our Global Learning we will also be looking at the Berlin Wall, why it existed and the gallery that it has now become. we will look at some of the artists that have contributed to East Side Gallery and the countries they come from.
During the first half term the children will learn about the Brother's Grimm story, Hansel and Gretel as told by Anthony Browne. All of our writing and reading will be based around this book in the first term. After the holidays, we will look at some of the other Brother's Grimm Stories too.
We will begin the term by learning about light, where it comes from, how it behaves and how we see. After that we will be learning about plants, reviewing what we know about them already and learning what plants need to grow and how water is transported around the plant. We'll be using this science topic to improve our skills in making and recording measurements.
During art attack week we will be creating some work inspired by the East Side Gallery, Anthony Browne and the Hansel and Gretel story. We will also be creating some big art for use in school as part of our Global Learning.
For our main DT focus this term we will be working with materials and electronics to tool for Hansel and Gretel.
Using our new school laptops, the children will be creating games inspired y Hansel and Gretel in scratch, using what they have learned to code the game themselves.
In music, the children shall be creating their own compositions. They will be using physical instruments as well as using Garage Band to create their own compositions.
In PE we are learning how to bat and ball games on Wednesdays and on Friday's we will be learning developing our athletics skills.
In the second half-term we will be playing games and learning outdoor adventurous activities.
PE takes place twice a week and children must have their own PE kit which they will keep in school, including a house team t-shirt which can be purchased from the school office. PE kits will be sent home at the end of each week for cleaning. As with previous years, children must have long hair tied back and jewellery should be removed.
RE and PSHE
RE and PSHE is taught by Miss Pickup on Wednesday mornings.
French is taught on Wednesday morning by Madame Leydon.
