Summer Term

Our World - Journeys

We have a fun and exciting term planned in Year 2.

We have a global focus to this term, focusing on journey's and travelling around our amazing world!

 

English

We shall be using a range of books to help focus our lessons and to inspire different types of writing.

Firstly, we shall be using

  • Grandad’s Island – Benji Davies – this book is a beautiful story about a little boy Syd who goes on a wonderful journey with his Grandad    . Image result for grandad's island

 

 

  • Paddington Bear – Michael Bond – with this book we will be exploring what it was like for Paddington arriving in England as a refugee.

 

      

 

We shall be creating our own story maps, writing stories, character descriptions, poems, postcards and letters. We will create and make our own Paddington story books where we will get chance to be the author, illustrator and publisher. We will also be learning more about SPVaG (Spelling, Punctuation, Vocabulary and Grammar) and writing within our topic work.

 

Maths- This term we shall be covering the topics outlined below.

Applying our number skills to problem solving and reasoning questions.

Quick recall of multiplication/division, addition/subtraction facts.

Times Tables

Measurement (capacity)

Fractions

Telling the time

 

P.E.

This term the children shall be working on gymnastics, athletics and cricket skills.

 

Science

We shall be exploring how seeds grow into plants. Looking at what plants need to grow. We will be growing some plants from seeds and creating our own class garden outside. If anyone has any gardening expertise and would like to come in to help the children with this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

History/Geography

We are going to be looking at where we live, our local environment, then looking at the UK – learning about London. We will use the Paddington Bear stories to find out about London. We are also going to look at Peru and South America (again linked to Paddington) comparing this to the UK.

We are going to learn how to read a map and create some of our own maps.

 

Music

We shall be listening to music from around the world and learning songs from different cultures.

We will be composing our own rhythms.

 

Art

We are going to be exploring mixed media collages, weaving and fabric painting. We will be designing and painting our own t-shits. During Art Attack week we will be working on a whole school Global Learning art project.

 

Design Technology

  • Food Technology – making sandwiches for Paddington Bear
  • Electronics – creating a simple circuit and making our own lighthouses

 

 

RE

  • Hindu – introduction to the Hindu faith
  • Christianity- What does the Bible say God is like?                                                                

Children will look at the organization of the Bible and read a selection of stories from it and how they present the actions of God helping his believers.

 

Computing

Smoovie animations- linked to Paddington Bear’s travels

Photo stories using powerpoint text, photos, pictures and sound
