This term’s English learning will be based on the fabulous book ‘Letters from a Lighthouse’ by Emma Carroll. The book is about two siblings evacuated during the war. It has a hint of mystery and espionage. Using this, we will be writing descriptions, letters, diaries, persuasive texts and narratives - focusing in particular on our vocabulary choices and year 6 grammar objectives. In addition, there are many drama opportunities which arise from this book.
Later in the term, we will be using WW2 inspired videos to help us write poetry and stories with flashbacks. During guided reading, the class will have the opportunity to study non-fiction texts as well. We will have guided reading sessions twice a week and will also focus on reading fluently and with sustained concentration.
In preparation for SATs, key skills such as times tables, mental maths and arithmetic will be focused on during this term. We will also be learning about place value, the four rules, fractions and decimals. In lessons, we will learn to consolidate our understanding and become fluent in the skills. Then we will apply our knowledge to different situations and reason mathematically, explaining our understanding to others.
Madame Leyden will be leading Science on a Thursday afternoon. She will be focusing on how we see and light as well as electricity.
In our War Child topic, children will learn the history behind World War Two and the countries affected. The class will focus on the impact the war had on children in the UK, including evacuation as well as children in Europe. We will also explore life in the trenches; the changing role of women; the impact of America joining the war and the importance of the Battle of Dunkirk. In DT we will design, make and evaluate our own air raid shelter. In Art we will explore colour creating Blitz paintings and soldier collages; we will also study the work of great artists such as Paul Nash and Henry Moore.
In November, Year 6 has the privilege of leading the school in our Remembrance service and reflecting on their WW2 learning so far.
This term our lessons will be on a Monday and Tuesday afternoon. We will be studying Basketball and Sportshall Athletics. Next half term we will learn some dances from the 1940s and explore sequences in gymnastics.
Please remember to bring in your full labelled kits and dress appropriately for the weather.
In Year 6 we will learn about internet safety whilst using searching engines and when talking to friends. We will also use coding in Scratch to make games about WW2. Our topic work will also give us the opportunity to use Microsoft Office, Imovies and search engine for research.
Miss Pickup will be delivering RE lessons.
Mme Leydon will be delivering French.
